Chomolungma means Holy Mother of the Earth. Europeans named it as Peak XV; later renamed after George Everest.

May 29, 1953 Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary made the first official ascent of the top of the highest mountain.

It was a great day.

Tenzing became the Tiger, and Hillary became the Lion.

News of the expedition's success reached London on the morning of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation, 2 June. Returning to Kathmandu a few days later, Hunt and Hillary discovered that they had been promptly knighted in the Order of the British Empire, a KBE, for the ascent.

Lukla airport was named after Tenzing and Hillary. It is one of the busy airports in the World.
