Bihar disaster

On June 6, 1981 a passenger train carrying more than 1000 passengers derailed and plunged into the river Bagmati near Saharsa, Bihar while it was crossing a bridge.

Original reports estimated that 800 people were aboard the train, but two Indian officials quoted by The Press Trust of India said that the toll could pass 1,000 and might reach 3,000.

The accident is among the deadliest-ever rail accident on record.
