Civic Arena

September 17, 1961, Civic Arena was open in Pittsburgh. It was the first retractable-dome stadium in the World.

Construction of the Civic Arena

Civic Arena is the home of the NHL Penguins, the Pittsburgh Spirit soccer team and the Pitt Panthers college football team.

But the first roof opening was only July 4, 1962 during Carol Burnett Show.

Civic Arena

Civic Arena hosted numerous concerts, the circus, political and religious rallies, roller derbies as well as contests in hockey, basketball, fish tournament weigh-ins, pro tennis in the mid-1970s, boxing, wrestling, lacrosse, indoor football, and ice skating championships.

In 1999 for $18 million the arena was renamed Mellon Arena.

But it closed on June 26, 2010. Demolition of the Igloo commenced on September 26, 2011.

A good memory!
