Carlos III

225 years ago, December, 14, 1788, the King of Spain Charles III died at the Royal Palace of Madrid.

As king of Spain he tried to rescue his empire from decay through far-reaching reforms such as weakening the Church and its monasteries, promoting science and university research, facilitating trade and commerce, modernizing agriculture and avoiding wars.

Menelik II

100 years ago, December 12, Menelik II died. He was the most unusual Emperor of Ethiopia and one of the strangest head of state in history.

Future Emperor of Ethiopia was born August 17, 1844 in Angolala, Shewa. He was baptized as Sahle Maryam.

He became Negus of Shewa in 1866 and was proclaimed a descendant of the legendary Queen of Sheba and King Solomon.

New Temperature Record: –91.2C

Coldest place on Earth discovered on Antarctic mountain Dome-F where temperatures plummet to below -91C. Such conditions could freeze a human's eyes, nose and lungs within minutes.


The newly discovered spots are even chillier than Soviet Vostok research station (now Russian), where the world’s previous coldest air temperature of –89.2C was recorded in 1983.

The Halifax Explosion occurred near Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, on the morning of December 6, 1917.

Before the atomic bomb on Hiroshima it was the worst man-made explosion in history...

World War I was more than 3 years old... French cargo ship SS Mont-Blanc fully loaded with wartime explosives, collided with the Norwegian vessel SS Imo in the Narrows, a strait connecting the upper Halifax Harbour to Bedford Basin.

RIP, Nelson

Former President of South Africa and anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela dies in Johannesburg at the age of 95...

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in the village of Mvezo in Umtatu, then a part of South Africa's Cape Province.

He spent more than 27 years in prisons. In 1962 he was arrested, convicted of sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government, and sentenced to life imprisonment, but was paroled by President Frederic de Klerk.

Whale explosion

The whale died from natural causes, as it entered too shallow waters and was not able to escape.

It was left for two days in the water, so the intestines had started to ferment and rot. This resulted in a pressure buildup, as can be seen in this video.

Sperm Whale explodes in the Faroe Islands while a man is trying to open his stomach. Sperm Whales are not killed in the Faroe Islands, this one died from natural causes.
