RIP, Nelson

Former President of South Africa and anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela dies in Johannesburg at the age of 95...

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in the village of Mvezo in Umtatu, then a part of South Africa's Cape Province.

He spent more than 27 years in prisons. In 1962 he was arrested, convicted of sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government, and sentenced to life imprisonment, but was paroled by President Frederic de Klerk.

In 1990-91 Mandela proceeded on an African tour, meeting supporters and politicians in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Libya and Algeria, continuing to Sweden where he was reunited with Tambo, and then London, where he appeared at the Nelson Mandela: An International Tribute for a Free South Africa concert in Wembley Stadium.


After abolishing apartheid Mandela was President of South Africa in 1994–1999. He became first black Head of the State in his country...
