Torre Ejecutiva Pemex

One year ago an explosion at the Torre Ejecutiva Pemex in Mexico City kills 37 people and injures more than 100.

Torre Ejecutiva Pemex is a skyscraper (214 m) with a heliport in Mexico City. It has been occupied by state-owned Pemex, one of the largest petroleum companies in the world.

At about 15:45 (CST), an explosion occurred in the basement of a parking garage adjacent to the main office building. The blast caused the first two stories of the fourteen-floor Building B-2 to partially collapse.

The cause of the blast was a gas leak that was ignited by an electrical fault.

28 years ago, 16:39:13 UTC, January 28, 1986 the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster occurred. It broke apart 73 seconds.

Apple and 1984

30 years ago, January 22, 1984...

The Apple Macintosh, the first consumer computer to popularize the computer mouse and the graphical user interface, is introduced during Super Bowl XVIII with its famous 1984 television commercial produced by Fairbanks Films, and directed by Ridley Scott.

Costa Concordia disaster

On 13 January 2012 Costa Concordia hit a rock off Isola del Giglio. A 53-metre (174 ft) long gash was made in the hull, along 3 compartments of the engine room (deck 0), and power to the engines and ship services was cut off.

About 300 people were left on board, most of whom were rescued by helicopter and motorboats. 32 passengers died, 64 injured, and 2 missing.

A salvage operation on September 2013 became the most expensive marine operation in history. On 17 September 2013 the Costa Concordia was brought to a vertical position through a parbuckling procedure.

Chichester Cathedral

The cathedral one of the tallest in Britain with the central spire reaching 277' (84m) high and can be seen by sailors; as well as being the only English Cathedral that can be seen from the sea.

Immature Blue-footed Boobies (Sula nebouxii) at Lake Skinner, CA in Riverside County. There are four individuals currently at this location that is very far north and inland from the northernmost area they are typically found (the Gulf of California in Mexico).
